Fangame Spotlight: "MegaMan Unlimited" Review

Developed by programmer Philippe "MegaPhilX" Poulin and his team of 5, Mega Man Unlimited is a fan game that makes you wonder if Capcom should have picked this game, rather than Street Fighter X Mega Man, to take over and reproduce under their label. And considering how many reproductions of this series have been created, it's quite a statement when I say that this is one of the shiniest gems in the fandom.

"Megaman Unlimited is a Megaman fan-game in the classic 8-Bit NES style both in sound and visuals. It is similar to Megaman 3 and Megaman 9-10 in design philosophy. MMU is made by fans for fun. It is not related to the official series’ canon. We are not making money with this project, as the Megaman brand is the property of Capcom.
This project has been under development for roughly 5 years, working in our free time after work nearly every day.
While in the NES 8-Bit style, Megaman Unlimited is made using currently existing technology and thus won’t work on an NES or on an old computer. Our goal was to have fun making this game and not necessarily following every technical limitations of the NES."

Check out the trailer below and tell me that this does not look like the real deal.

This project began production over 5 years ago after the debut of Capcom's Mega Man 9 and was completed and released July 13, 2013 for Windows and Mac computers. Mega Man Unlimited initially began as an unofficial sequel to MegaMan 9 before an actual Mega Man 10 was made by Capcom. And if you didn't know any better, you would think this game was part of the series.

Review

Mega Man Unlimited Title
Mega Man Unlimited has a little bit of everything:

Game Play: Sticking true to the series, the game pits Mega Man through 8 levels with a powerful Robot Master at the end. After defeating all 8 and getting their signature powers, Mega Man begins the arc in pursuit of the final boss battle. He'll be running, jumping, sliding, and shooting new and re-imagined baddies along the way.

Keiji Inafune turns to Kickstarter for a new “Mega Man”

Is Comcept’s Mighty No. 9 the “Mega Man” game we’ve been waiting for?

It’s only been running for a short time, but the man behind the Blue Bomber has already raised way more than enough to meet preliminary goals to begin production of Mighty No. 9 - which is, noticeably, more than inspired by the heart and soul (and gameplay) of his first creation, Mega Man. But it gets deeper than that. The similarities between Mighty No. 9 and Mega Man could reflect why Inafune left Capcom in the first place.

Fans of all Mega Man series are supporting this project and the amount of backers is climbing each day, with some confirmed pledges of over $10,000.

Rant: What is Capcom doing to Mega Man?

One of my first articles that I wrote for The Geek Generation is a rant that sadly is still pretty relevant today. Granted, it was great to see Street Fighter x Mega Man but then nothing else has emerged other than Mega Man being included in Super Smash Bros. 4. I've got nothing against games with massive development times or hiatuses, but it's been ages since a new Mega Man title of any series to even be announced. Take a look at my thoughts and see if you agree with me.

Everyone can recognize Mega Man. He’s the arm cannon-wielding robot otherwise known as the “Blue Bomber”. Next to characters like Mario and Sonic, Mega Man is certainly a famous and successful character spanning tons of adventure games, fighting games, and many RPGs over the past 25 years. With 7 different Mega Man characters with various timelines, you would think that Capcom has endless options for making new Mega Man games. And yet, three – count them, three – Mega Man projects in the past 2 years have been scrapped and the only game in production is Mega Man Xover (pronounced Cross-over) for the iOS; a freakin’ cellphone game! So let’s look at what Capcom felt wasn’t good enough to give the fans despite their incessant demands for them.
